Late post, but from last night, before I left for Ritual. This was me as Robert Smith. I feel like I look a good bit like him. However, turtlenecks are nobody's friend. By the time we got there, after a visit from the drama llama, it was raining, and my hair had fallen. Oh woe is me.

Art rag

The sculpture graduate students that share my classes are fabulous. I got some very solid advice/ help/ secret place to use as a pseudo studio from one of them today.

I now have an idea of how to build the space I'm looking for. I'll need 2x4s, 3 panels of 4x8 sheetrock, some spackle (which he said he'd loan me), some paint, some carpet, and then all of the other things that go into this project.

Tomorrow, I'm going over to a friends to see if the desk she had floating around her house will work for what I'm going for. This weekend at some point, I need to make a Lowes run. First I need someone with a truck. This might be tricky. Uuugh. I'll get it done- I have to!

This photo once had my head in it, but the combination of the way my head was turned, the scarf, and my derisive gaze resulted in a multiple-chin situation that I didn't see need to show.

One of the only pictures that has ever been made of me at work. Reasons why should be evident. Smocks are not foxy. Even in the small size, they make you look like you're wearing a garbage bag. This was after a long, long night working in smoothies. We have a full-timer who is supposed to run the station, but naturally she ducks out for about 30-45 minutes every hour and comes back to admonish us if there is any work for her to do. Add to this that the blenders all took turns being broken, and then were all broken at once, and then took turns again, and you have a bloody wonderful night at smoothies. The damage to the pants isn't full visible. But it's there.

Glad to be home. Tired, have reading to do, and really want to play lego Batman.

Art Rag

For my installation class, we were giving the assignment to do 80 pieces in 2 weeks without any classtime to work on them. At all. I'm mildly freaking out about it, but I think I have a pretty solid idea.

I want to create a space, whether I have to put up two false walls, or use a small room downstairs. The piece will be made up like someone's room, but only one part of it. There'll be a desk and a chair, and the rest of the space will be empty. The walls will be covered in posters and notes, and the desk will be filled and covered with my pieces. The theme I'm working with it the story of a man who wants to become a superhero, and is taking steps to do so. Things like drawing a symbol, pros and cons of having a cape, cans of protein shakes, sweat rags from workouts, poster of batman and superman and the flash and the green lantern will cover the walls. There will be various bits of attempted costume all over the place. Evidence of a neglect of schoolwork will also be found. I might make some doll-figures to put on the desk.

And then I realized that I was making a self-portrait.

Woke up, took picture. No makeup, no clothes. Lots of mousse in my hair last night makes it go WHOO!

So I've been given my first project in two of my classes. I don't have as much of an idea on the casting project that I do the metal fabrication project, but I'm working on it. These are some sketches for the "steel box" project. The requirements for this project are that we weld a steel box that is 7 3/4 by 7 3/4 by 7 3/4. After we successfully do that, we are free to do whatever we want to it to create an art object.

I have decided that I will cut one of the sides off of the box, and weld it to a 6 ft tall metal pole/ wave type of construct. This construct will have a circular circumference, and will have 3 or 4 1/4 inch rod supporters. The rest of it will be in 9 or 12 gauge wire that I'll stretch and twist along the supports. Then I want to seal the inside of the box and paint it a bright lime green. Then I will fill it just beyond the point of spilling with water.

This is what I have so far. Still brainstorming. Not even sure if it'll be structurally stable with the added weight of the water.

I bought this flannel shirt. On the surface, I bought it so it could be a work shirt for my metal and foundry classes, but for the really real, I bought it because it looks like Kurt Cobain's flannel shirt that he wore on the cover of Rolling Stone.
